However, more sophisticated (and expensive) gyroscopes are titanium. The preferred material of gyroscopes is aluminum because of its expansion and strength characteristics. The rotor is a freely rotating disk that mounts onto a spinning axis in the middle of a larger, more stable wheel. Most gyroscopes are made of a frame, gimbal, rotor, and spin axis. Gyroscopes are very useful in modern navigation systems because tilting or moving the gyroscope will not affect the directional readings. This phenomenon is called gyroscopic precession. When subjected to an external torque, the spin axis forms a cone shape. In relation to a gyroscope, an object that is spinning will remain spinning in its original orientation. Inertia is the property to do nothing or to remain unchanged. You will find these two fundamental properties in all rotating bodies, including the earth. These two fundamental properties include gyroscopic inertia and precession. When spinning, the orientation of the body does not affect the orientation of the spin axis. When the earth rotated beneath the gyroscope, the gyroscope would maintain its orientation in space.Ī gyroscope, or gyro, is a device that spins on and around an axis. In 1852, French physicist Leon Foucault made the first gyroscope, as part of his investigation of earth's rotation. ![]()
